From a press release:

Recipients of mini-grants in 2009: Mt. St. John School, Camp Hazen YMCA, Deep River Congregational Church, Essex Library Association

To provide incentive to nonprofits serving youth in Chester, Deep River, or Essex, Tri-Town Services will once again offer mini-grants for community projects that build youth assets. The funding for this initiative has been provided by United Way of Middlesex County, through their Positive Youth Development Impact Team.

In January 2009, students of Chester, Deep River, and Essex in grades 7-12 responded to a survey and the results showed that while our youth gained assets since the May 2005 survey, we still have room to grow. We would like to improve scores in the areas of parental support, communication, positive values, and planning and decision-making. The more “assets” a youth possesses, the greater his or her chances of succeeding, or thriving. As might be expected, the fewer assets possessed, the greater the chances of getting involved in risk-taking behavior such as alcohol or other drug use, violence, etc.

Activities that may be eligible for mini-grant funding, up to $1,000, include community service projects, projects that link multiple generations, projects with role model components, skill and leadership training, and after-school activities. Projects benefiting all three towns are encouraged. The Healthy Communities•Healthy Youth Mini-Grant Committee of Tri-Town Youth Services will review all applications. Funding for approved projects will be awarded on April 13, 2010; projects will take place May 1-August 31, 2010.

Applications and guidelines will be available at the Tri-Town Youth Services office beginning March 1. All applicants are required to attend a mini-grant workshop at Tri-Town Youth Services on Tuesday, March 9 at 6:00 p.m. Completed applications are due by March 23 at noon. For additional information, call Gail M. Onofrio at 526-3600.

Courage to Speak-Courageous Parenting 101 is a free, four-session drug prevention education program to help parents understand drug abuse and its impact on children and youth. The course will be offered at the Valley Regional High School Library and begins Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at 7:00 pm. It continues every consecutive Wednesday, March 3, 10, 17, and 24, 2010 from 7:00-9:00 p.m..

The program will be offered by a facilitator certified by The Courage to Speak Foundation, Inc. and will cover a variety of materials, such as fundamentals of drug abuse prevention, drug trends in America, signs of drug use, communication skills, how to find out if a child is using drugs, what to do if a child is using drugs, and other timely and relevant material.

You will gain the tools and knowledge required to communicate more effectively with children on drug abuse issues. It is expected that participating parents will demonstrate an active role in supporting children’s decisions to not use tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.

The seminar is open to parents in all communities with children in Elementary, Middle and High School free of charge.

The next meeting of the Tri-Town Substance Abuse Prevention Council will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Tri-Town Youth Services, 56 High Street in Deep River.

The Directors of Youth and Family Services of Haddam-Killingworth and East Haddam Youth and Family Services, Cheryl Chandler and Toni McCabe, respectively, will present with Tri-Town Youth Services Director, Gail Onofrio on recent accomplishments of Together We Can, a collaboration of the three youth service bureaus.

Following this presentation, attendees will have an opportunity for discussion, facilitated by Linda Fecteau of Creating Opportunities for Youth. This focus group will elicit strategies to develop ideas that came out of the Community Forum on Youth Issues.

Membership on this Council is open to all who live or work in Chester, Deep River, or Essex who are concerned about substance abuse and interested in its prevention. Please join us to share your thoughts, to learn more about prevention, and to get involved. For more information, call 526-3600.
