We received the following press release from the Community Music School today:

A variety of activities for children and adults are slated for Community Music School’s free Open House on Saturday, September 12 from 10-1 at Spencer’s Corner (90 Main Street) in Centerbrook. Whether you want to join in yourself or simply look and listen, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy that day.

Having recently expanded with several new studios, CMS is proud to show off their updated facilities, including a state-of-the-art digital piano lab. The nonprofit school boasts 17 studios, 30 professional faculty members, and nearly 600 students of all ages. Students and instructors will be performing throughout the Open House.

If you’d like to make music yourself, you are invited to participate in a World Drumming Circle, sample a Kindermusik class, and get up close and personal with strings, brass, percussion and woodwinds in the Instrument Petting Zoo. If the weather permits, an Open Mike will be set up so that performers can claim their own 15-minutes of fame! And be sure to check out the New Horizons Band, a program of group instruction for adults who have always wanted to play an instrument or who would like to return to an instrument they played years ago.

Parents will have the opportunity to learn about CMS’s fall programs, ask questions about Suzuki instruction, meet with a certified music therapist, request scholarship/financial aid applications, and enter a drawing for a $100 gift certificate. There will also be a Musical Instrument Tag Sale where you may be able to pick up a bargain. (Those with instruments to sell should contact the school in advance to pre-register.)

Community Music School is currently accepting students for the Fall Semester, which begins on September 10. More information is available at www.community-music-school.org or by calling (860) 767-0026.

On Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 4:30 p.m., the Community Music School will be offering a free Suzuki Demo Day.

Instructors Christine Coyle (cello), Marianna Kiss (violin), Jessie Primett (violin), and Nancy Thomas (piano) will demonstrate and discuss the Suzuki Method which was developed decades ago by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki.

This method is based on the principle of learning to play the instrument in the same way children learn to talk – by listening and imitating. The Community Music School typically accepts children who are 4 years old or older for Suzuki instruction, although younger children may be accepted for 15-minute introductory lessons on the violin.

Please call the school to register at (860) 767-0026.
